On Monday we went on a tour of the parliament building. The parliament is the largest building in Budapest, and it is the third largest parliament building in the world (the second largest in Europe).

The building is stunning, and it is crazy to imagine how people managed to build such a giant building. The whole building is symmetrical, which just makes it more impressive.

It took around 20 years to build (1885-1904), and after the Second World War, it took almost triple that amount of time to repair it.

The height of the main dome reaches 96 meters. The parliament and the St. Stevens Basilica are the same height (they are the two tallest buildings in Budapest and buildings are not allowed to be taller). Apparently, the equality in their heights is to show the balance between the state and the church (Hungary is a Christian, primarily catholic, country).

The parliament building is magnificent, and I am very glad to have seen it. It was a great thing to do on my birthday!
