Yesterday, while we were in Venice, we went to St. Marks Basilica and square.
The Basilica is like a treasure chest for all of the booty that the Venetians have stolen. All of the jewels and gold inside the Basilica were stolen.
What I found quite crazy was that there were almost 2000 jewels on the golden altar piece. The golden altar piece is a golden leaf imprinted with religious scenes and covered in jewels that the Venetians stole from Constantinople in 1204.
St. Marks (the Basilica and the square) is stunning. I think it looks very pretty at night when it is covered in lights. Although it is pretty, the square is not my favorite place to be because there are SO many pigeons!!! I do not like pigeons and there were so many and I could not escape them.
Around the square, there are some cafes where you can order a drink and enjoy the beautiful area around you, but most of them were closed because it is the winter and we were out on a Monday night. Some of the cafes around St. Marks square have been there for 300 years.
I was glad we went to St. Marks, and I am even more glad that I don’t ever have to be around that many pigeons again!
