We had a lovely Shabbat in Gibraltar last week. For both dinner Friday night, and lunch on Saturday, we went to the same family (we got in touch through a Seattle contact). The family was so nice and their house was beautiful.
After lunch, we headed for a walk out to the coast (which really is not that far). On the coast of Gibraltar, at most points, you are able to see Spain and Morocco. Morocco is only 9 miles from Gibraltar at the narrowest point!
The Jewish community is about 800 people and somehow they support 4 Shuls, schools, a bakery, and a few restaurants. The community is orthodox, so they sadly don’t have an egalitarian davening option. On Saturdays, after shul, you can see all the Jews schmoozing on Main Street. Also on Main street, every Saturday at noon, citizens dress up and march through as soldiers from different historical periods.
