In the Hebrew month of Elul up until Yom Kippur there is a special service that takes place before dawn.

Last night/this morning, Alexandra, my mom, my friend Zohar, and I went to the Kotel for Selichot.

Around 11 pm we took the bus to the Kotel, but all of the roads near it were blocked off because it gets so crowded for Selichot. The bus driver was very intent on getting us as close to the Kotel as possible, so he fought with a police officer to be able to drive on a blocked off road.

Once we got off the bus, we had to walk through the large mob of people trying to get to and from the Kotel. After 5 or 10 minutes we were at the plaza, and with Alexandra in the lead we pushed our way through and we all got to actually touch the wall.

It was insanely loud, and the person leading was crying into the microphone, which sounded like a earsplitting shriek. It was super loud and SO PACKED, so we left after 45 minutes.

This was a very unique experience, and I’m glad we went but I don’t how soon I would want to go back.
