I really enjoyed seeing the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. It is a gorgeous building with many intricate designs. The part that made it so unique and awesome was the sheer size of it. It is ginormous!!! The building covers 24,000 square meters. It is one of the largest mosques in the world.
Inside, all 11 naves are separated by double arches. The arches are all red and white striped. They stand on the 856 remaining columns (there used to be over 1000).
The Mosque-Cathedral became a national monument in 1882, and a world heritage site in 1984.
Mass has been held everyday since at least the year 1236, but possibly even earlier.
The story of this building is quite fascinating. It has been a prayer space for two religions (Christianity and Islam). Most of the time it was not shared, but for a short time it was shared.
After being built, the Mosque was enlarged three times.
Anybody who goes to Córdoba MUST go to the Mosque-Cathedral!
