The fourth stop on our food tour of the shuk was a stop at the Jahnun Bar. (Jahnun is pronounced jach noon).
Jahnun is a Yemenite dish. And this dish is commonly served on Shabbat because it cooks overnight on Friday. Jahnun is served with grated tomato, hard boiled eggs, and other toppings. The dough is kind of a fluffy savory crepe dough.
Fun Fact- Malawach is flat and has toppings on top like a pizza but jahnun is rolled just as dough and is served with the toppings on the side.
I really enjoyed Jahnun. It tasted super delicious, kinda like sabich but on dough and not in a pita. There was a little bit of a salty aftertaste, which I enjoyed, and it was super flavorful with a good texture.
Next tine you are in the shuk, if you are willing to be a little adventuress, go visit the Jahnun Bar. And don’t worry about it closing because it is open until about 3 am!

P.S. Jahnun would be improved with garlic.

Don’t let the picture fool you, it does actually taste good.
