Last Friday, we arrived in Gibraltar. Right away we went up to The Rock. After Andi (our friend) courageously drove up to The Rock, we discovered we couldn’t drive all the way up, so we headed back down to go on a taxi tour. Our taxi tour ended up being great and we had the best guide!

Gibraltar is a British territory on the tip of Spain, almost completely surrounded by water. It is a very strategical place to be in charge of. It was first under Moorish rule (711-1462), then Spanish rule (1492-1704), and finally British rule (1704-present).

If you are from Gibraltar, you are Gibraltarian. There are only about 30,000 people who live in Gibraltar. The language is British English and some people also know Spanish. Our tour guide said people also speak Spanglish.

The closest Spanish city is La Linea which is just on the other side of the border.

Unlike most places, including Spain, Gibraltar is mostly tax free. Oil, tobacco, alcohol, perfume, and cosmetics are all tax free. You can always see lots of big boats in the bay waiting to get refueled with tax free oil.

One of the 200 adorable (but aggressive) monkeys that live on The Rock

Just chilling with my friend (hopefully he doesn’t get aggressive with me!)

You can tell from the flat backside that this monkey is male. The backsides of females are cushioned for them to sit on when they are pregnant.

To get in and out of Gibraltar, you literally drive down the middle of the runway. This is one of the top ten most dangerous runways in the world.
