Monday afternoon, after stopping at El Retiro (one of Madrid’s ‘central park’s) and a modern art gallery, we went to dinner.
Dinner was amazing! The restaurant was historic, beautiful, and served delicious food. The building was used as a wine cellar before it became a restaurant; the restaurant is in a basement.
We ordered a salad, artichoke flowers, pumpkin ravioli, and 3 fishes. In addition, the chef gave us a vegetable puree.
All the food was delicious, especially the fish. The best fish was a cod confit with pear “ali I oil” (5 stars), then the Baked Butter Fish with zucchini and lime emulsion (4.75 stars). Our least favorite, but still good, was the Hake with potato cream, garlic, and sweet red pepper (4.25 stars).
“In Bodega De Los Secretos four centuries of history have left plenty of Secrets. In the 17th century this area of Madrid was surrounded by vineyards, perfect place for a wine cellar.” -History sign from the restaurant
“In 1808 Napoleon’s troops failed to find people from Madrid hidden in this secret cellar. Along the Spanish Civil War this was a “bomb shelter”. Last two wars in Madrid left us a secret escape tunnel that still you can see in our main room.” -More from the history sign
