How many last days of school can you have?

Before COVID, our last day of school was supposed to be Thursday, June 18th.

Then, as people learnt how little you learn online, they wanted the school year to go longer. So, we were told that we were likely to be ending school at the end of June.

However, our school switched to online learning right away, so we didn’t miss a single day of school, and many people thought it wasn’t fair that the school year was going to be extended.

Over the spring months, everyone was fighting with everyone about when the last day of school should be. The ministry of education, the teachers union, the ministry of finance, and different schools, but honestly who even knows!

Everything was a mess! At some point, someone said that we would not know when the last day of school was until June 17th (the day before a possible last day of school).

Finally, on June 15th, we were told officially that school would be going to June 30th. Teachers then had to plan for two more weeks of school. Although, some schools had made their own decisions about what day would be the last day of school and then this mess did not affect them.

This probably all seems crazy so far, but just wait, it gets crazier!!!

On Friday, June 19th, our school told us that the day before, June 18th, had been the last day of school. We didn’t have school on Fridays, so it was very unexpected that we wouldn’t be returning to school the following Sunday.

The people for whom this was the worst were the teachers. On Monday, of what they had thought was the last week of school, they were told they needed to plan activities to fill up two more weeks of school, and then they never got the chance to do last-week-of-school activities.

Now that we are back in Seattle, hopefully there will be less last minute decisions about school.
